More Shafts, Please.

January 2024

I have been working in silence and solitude, as I am want to do while weaving. My latest studies have taken me to 8-shaft weaving on my new Ashford 24-inch 8-shaft loom.

After spending the the greater part of this past fall learning to network draft, and assembling my new loom, I created my first draft using a WIF program. I’m happy to share it came out so well. My first rendition in silk is so delicate, and the warmer second draft is a lovely mix of my hand dyed merino and baby alpaca (pictured to the right). That scarf was donated and recently auctioned in support of a local arts nonprofit.

I’m shifting my weaving and dyeing practice to plant fibers for the first half of 2024. I have not yet worked with fiber reactive dyes and look forward to the new medium. Currently i’m planning to warp up the Ashford with a mix of my handpainted silk and a similar weight hand painted tencel. A blend of rich purples, light greens, and wintery blue will make for a fun piece. Have not decided on a weft yet, but i’m leaning towards natural silk.

Cheers!
